My boss and I meet at Spinelli cafe in Orchard almost once a week. Last time we met, he gave me his second on-the-spot quiz, which will give you an idea what stuff I deal with every day.
Boss: What are the three most active origins right now?
Me: India… (Boss nods, smiles) hmm, Latin America seems to be going smoothly with its trades… (another nod. Then I pause to think, hard-pressed for that last one importer. Thailand? no.Definitely not. The rice policy for farmers haven’t even made its dent on the global market let alone have the floods boost the trades.. no one’s buying Thai rice tsktsk. Cambodia? certainly not. Too little export and their most priced destination is a chunk of Europe. It has to be a country that exports to Asian countries… if you do business in Asia, that has to be something huge, hello, major demands from our rice eating friends are in Asia… I return to spoken words) U.S. is not doing fine right now, so, Vietnam?
There goes a snippet of our meeting. I like the kind eyes of this person, the Boss. Humble in a way that he doesn’t boast about his knowledge or achievements whatsoever. He’s UK-educated. That explains a tinge of British accent. I imagine him sometimes as an Economics professor who gives a test to my goldfish memory.
